At Oak Tree School we want to support you the best way we can so you can make informed decisions about your future.
The careers programme we deliver in school will give you lots of support and information you need, however you may wish to find out more about different jobs and opportunities available to you in your own time at your own pace. If so, this web page is for you and will give you access to really useful information and resources.

Learning About Different Jobs

Another term we use for learning about jobs is called “Labour Market Information” or “LMI” for short. It can help you find out about lots of different careers, including;

  • Job descriptions. For example, what would you do working as a farmer?
  • How much you could get paid for a particular job.
  • What skills, qualities and qualifications would you need for a particular job.
  • What are the entry routes to a particular job? For example, going to college or doing an apprenticeship.
  • Future demand. Will this job be needed so much in the future?

How do I find out about jobs and access Labour Market Information?

LMI can be accessed from a range of sources. For example:

Career Pilot

Understanding Myself

Having a good understanding of ourselves is really important when making decisions for the future. Knowing what we like and what we don’t like, knowing our personal skills and qualities are very important. This will help us decide what we may want to do in the future, for example, go to college, or decide what jobs we would like or not like to do. We also need to be able to do this when we write our CV, complete an application form or attend an interview.

Here are some resources that will help you begin to think about yourself in more detail.

Career Pilot Job Sector Quiz

A short and simple quiz where you identify what job sectors you may want to work in the future. (You will need to create a free account using an active email address to do this quiz.)

Career Pilot Skills Profile

A short questionnaire where you identify your skills. This then links it to jobs you may want to do in the future. (You will need to create a free account using an active email address to do this quiz.)

The Buzz Quiz

A personality quiz designed to increase your awareness of your natural strengths, how you work in teams and what courses or jobs might suit you best. Focusing on personality helps us achieve this more than focusing on skills and knowledge.

National Careers Service Skills Assessment

This is a slightly longer self assessment than the one on Career Pilot, however it will allow you to link you skills and interests to a wide variety of different jobs that you may be interested in the future.
