Celebrating our Primary Science Quality Mark Award for Excellence

Oak Tree School, located in Truro and heralded ‘outstanding in all areas’ by Ofsted, has been recognised for high calibre science provision with the award of a Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM). Oak Tree School, part of Acorn Education at Outcomes First Group, provides specialist education for vulnerable children and young people aged 7 to 16 years old who experience social, emotional, mental health, communication difficulties and associated challenging behaviours. The prestigious PSQM is awarded to infant, junior, primary, middle and special schools to celebrate commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning.

On receiving the award, Catherine Hill, Head of Faculty at Oak Tree School, said, “This award recognises the collaboration of the teachers here at Oak Tree School, and their commitment to providing the best education for every child with more opportunities to access science in increasingly creative and engaging ways.”

Providing a structured, nurturing approach, with pupils accessing a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum, the school’s priorities are to develop and improve the pupils’ core knowledge, skills and confidence, so they make a manageable and successful transition to work or college within society.

Schools qualifying for the PSQM are evaluated on four criteria – subject leadership, teaching, learning and wider opportunities. They must have a clear vision of science provision, embed science across the curriculum and implement quality teaching. Science development plans must include teacher training, supporting effective teaching, learning and assessment strategies, quality resources and community links. The award illustrates the rich and varied science experiences available for pupils at Oak Tree School, with in-school and outdoor learning opportunities.

Commenting on the award, Associate Professor Jane Turner, PSQM National Director said, “Schools that have achieved a Primary Science Quality Mark have demonstrated a significant commitment to science teaching and learning, even at this challenging time for schools. The profile and quality of science in each awarded school is very high. Children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom, developing positive attitudes towards science as well as secure scientific understanding and skills.”
